Rough Terrain Forklift Safety
Made for construction sites, where materials should be transported on surfaces that are not paved are rough terrain forklifts. The safe and correct use of rough terrain forklifts is vital in order to guarantee the wellbeing of both the operator and other personnel at the work site.
Terrain
Even if these trucks are built for rough terrain, you still should be very careful in order avoid tip overs. The forklift is top heavy and should only be operated on level ground when lifting.
Speed
Even if there are no Occupational Safety and Health Administration rules governing forklift speed limits, forklift drivers must drive at a safe speed every time. Driving on rough or uneven terrain needs even more caution. Steering, in particular, can be very risky at faster speeds.
Incline
If you are operating on an incline, you should keep the load on the machine's uphill side. The rule of thumb is drive up, and then back down. Never try to raise a load when operating on an inclined surface. The change in the center of gravity could cause the machinery to tip over.
Safety Devices
Like any driver, forklift operators are obliged to put on seat belts. Make certain that the overhead guard is firmly in position. Depending upon the working surroundings, hearing and eye protection might need to be worn. Check that a working fire extinguisher is mounted on the forklift.
Weather
Weather conditions could affect forklift operating conditions. Load handling, speed and turning might need to be adjusted to ensure safety when operating a forklift in snow, ice or rain.
