The Industrial Truck Association or ITA has determined 7 different categories of forklifts. These classes are divided into the type of work setting; smooth or rough surfaces, outdoors, indoors and narrow aisle; by the kind of engine; whether the operator is sitting down or standing; and finally the characteristics of the machinery, regarding the maximum grade and type of tire. Some of the classes are further sub-divided by operating characteristics. Below are the following forklift categories:

Class 1 Forklifts: are considered to be electric motor trucks with air filled or pneumatic tires or cushion tires. The Class 1 forklifts also consist of 4 lift codes, or subcategories which are:

Lift Code 1: Counterbalanced, stand up rider types.
Lift Code 4: 3-Wheel electric sit-down models.
Lift Code 5: Counterbalanced rider, cushion tire sit down tires.
Lift Code 6: Includes pneumatic tire models, sit-down rider, and counterbalanced rider.

Class 2 Forklifts: Class 2 lift trucks narrow aisle trucks with solid tires and electric motors.
Class 3 Forklifts: The class 3 lift truck will include all hand/rider trucks electric and fuel based with solid tires.
Category 4 Forklifts: Class 4 forklifts are the IC or internal combustion models. These are sit down rider models with cushion tires. Generally, they are suitable for use on hard surfaces and indoor use.
Category 5 Forklifts: Class 5 is Internal Combustion Engine sit down rider models equipped with pneumatic tires. Normally, these units are great for working on rough surfaces outdoors or on areas with significant inclines.
Class 6 Forklifts: Class 6 lift trucks would consist of internal combustion powered or electric models. These ride-on units have the capability to tow at least 1000 pounds. This class is engineered and designed to tow loads rather than lift it.
Class 7 Forklifts: Class 7 just included rough terrain models with pneumatic tires. The Category 7 forklifts are powered by diesel engines and are almost exclusively utilized outside.

These categories were designed to keep the huge field of lift trucks organized and separated. In order to get their work completed, various working atmospheres depend on different classifications. Forklifts are quite specific in their lifting and loading capacities. Their various types of tires and engines are made for particular operation. To be able to choose the best forklift to meet all your needs and to fulfill your jobs, do some research to know precisely what you will require from your particular model.
