Duties of a Forklift Driver
Forklift drivers are employed within factories and warehouses to move materials from one location to another. Forklift operators require specialized training, that is normally provided by the workplace. Prospective operators must be able to pass a background check and a drug test.
Performing Inspections
Carrying out safety and functionality checks on a daily basis is part of the various responsibilities of a forklift operator. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration mandates that all forklifts be checked before use. The operator must check the forklift again at the end of the shift. Annual safety training is an important part of a forklift operator's job description.
Unloading and Loading
To be able to unload and load materials and to stack products in an efficient and timely manner, forklift operators utilize the controls on the forklift.
Weighing Materials
As part of the many tasks, the forklift driver should both weigh and log the weights of the materials they should move.
Quality Control
One more important part of a forklift operator's responsibility is quality control. This includes ensuring orders are correct and making sure the materials do not sustain damage during the moving process.
Battery Maintenance and Care
Caring for the forklift battery helps ensure a long life span for the unit. Proper maintenance and care comprise checking the water level inside the forklift battery approximately every five charge cycles, filling the cell to just above the visible protector, being careful not to overflow the water, and cleaning up any spills. Once a battery is charging, never disrupt the cycle.
PPE: Personal Protective Equipment
When performing works on the forklift battery, like inspecting the water level, Personal Protective Equipment or PPE is necessary. Both hand protection and eye protection must be worn, and a fire extinguisher and acid spill kit should be on hand. Forklift operators must always observe safety rules. The charging place should be kept ventilated and clear of open flame.
