Forklift Battery Safety
The power to operate electric forklifts is provided by large industrial batteries that have to be charged regularly and maintained properly. Safety procedures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is very vital to check battery fluid levels.
PPE - Personal Protective Equipment
Eye protection is essential for anyone working with a lift truck battery. Full protection includes goggles, safety glasses, or a full face shield. The right way to protect skin and clothing from leaked acid or other residue is to put on thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging area must be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station must not be blocked and an employee who is injured should be able to reach the eyewash station from the charging area in 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited near a charging area and battery. Do not permit things like matches or lighters to be utilized while someone is inspecting the fluid levels in the battery.
Ventilation
It is vital to keep the battery charging area correctly ventilated. The recharging process can release gas. These gases are both poisonous and explosive.
