A stock picker, also known as an order picker is a machine that is somewhat like a forklift. It allows the driver to utilize forks to raise a pallet. An order picker is also capable of lifting the operator up to higher shelves for picking certain items, and this feature is something the forklift does not offer. Typically, order pickers are operated by electricity. These kind of equipment are mainly used in a warehouse environment. Most often they are used for transporting pallets and finishing certain tasks in the stocking and shelving department.
The order picker operator utilizes controls to control the unit from a platform setting that normally sits quite close to the ground. The operator is able to direct the equipment to go backwards, forwards or steer it from side to side. Once the operator has positioned the unit in place the blades can be raised to the required level which makes it really convenient for the operator. For instance, if the required materials, are located on a shelf that the operator cannot reach, then entire platform is capable of being raised up to certain level. Due to the counterweight located at the other end, the unit remains balanced, even at higher levels.
The platform is then lowered back to its original position after the order has been picked. The order picker is then driven or directed to its next location. With most models, it is possible to move the order picker whilst the platform is raised, although, several businesses may have policies and procedures in place preventing such maneuvers for safety reasons. An order picker can also place pallets on a shelf. Forklifts and stackers may be used to complete these specific jobs at some companies instead.
